Movie-goers can be fickle (great movies that should've enjoyed huge box-office success)
by LoveUniHateExams injust thought i'd start a thread about this topic.. john carpenter's the thing (1982) was a great film, one of his best imo.
for me, it's right up there with alien (1979) as one of the greatest sci-fi horror films ever made.
and yet one film made anything between $100 - 200 million at the box office whereas the other made only $19 million.

The Star Wars prequel trilogy. Oh wait, they were commercially and critically successful.

My search for religion.
by joe134cd insince leaving the jws i have become more interested in finding out about other faiths.
here are a few of my findings.. lds: i just couldnt get my head around the mental gymnastics i would have to do to understand their doctrines and theology.
i attended their services twice.

Hi joe134cd, thanks for sharing your spiritual journey. As a Christian, my personal opinion is that when the Bible says to avoid "sects" and other similar thoughts, this applies to all denominations. Any subdivision of Christianity is in effect a sect, and as such there can be no true religion in the sense of any one denomination that 'has it'. What makes Christians different than ancient Israel is that now God deals with individuals and their personal faith. Not that it's wrong to fellowship with other Christians, even in church settings, but I don't think it should take precedence, and I'd never want to get dogmatic/set in my ways or 'go beyond the things written'. Do your best to maintain you personal autonomy, and never give your faith away to humans.

I got back from the memorial . . .
by neat blue dog init was pretty mundane for the most part, same songs, same outline.
the only new thing they added was the video at the end, where stephen lett speaks to the visitors and commends them for coming and recommends they go to jwdotorg and also start a bible study.
they also showed a bar graph with figures increasing every year for jws, memorial attendance and memorial partakers.

They also showed a bar graph with figures increasing every year for JWs, memorial attendance and memorial partakers. He said that since the number of partakers has been steadily rising in recent years, it is proof of God's blessing and the nearness of the end, seeing as these figures can't be sustained for too many years without exceeding 144,000, therefore evidently the end must be close.

I re-read the Bible and saw that their teachings cannot be backed up by it.

Go to memorial tonight and chug the entire cup when it's passed to you
by Bad_Wolf inhas anybody done this?
i'd love to hear the story.
i wonder how they'd scramble to fix that if somebody chugged the whole glass, and even more if was set up with two people to sit in places to get both glasses at the same time.

Being a JW kid is hell
by JRK inin therapy, i was told i should write a letter of grievances to each of my parents.
i really do not have any for my mother, except for things that directly relate to being raised as a jehovah's witness.
upon reflection, my childhood was hell because of the religion and its pernicious corruption of a normal childhood.

I agree it was a living hell. My JW mother was a convert about a decade before I was born, and due to her highly dysfunctional family background, she clung to the troof tighter than ever and dragged me down with her. Recently a member on this board put a call out for hypothetical letters that we'd never actually send to family members, and it felt so good to get all my feelings out even though she'll never read it. (I didn't post it publicly, it was through private message, as the new poster said they were writing a book and looking for submissions in that vein).
Seems we all have mommy issues, JW style ® lol
